Rules

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

01. Introduction

Hymn of Hope is an online QuakeWorld 1on1 deathmatch competition that uses a single elimination system. It is intense as it only spans over 1 day each month. As the tournaments first goal is to provide fun and entertainment for all involved, it may seem strange to have rules in the first place. However, whenever a competitive aspect is present, some rules will be necessary to make sure everyone can face eachother in a fair environment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

02. Registration

Hymn of Hope is open for all European QuakeWorld players. However, non-European players are free to sign up as long as they play their matches in Europe.
Upon registration you will be given a username and password, don't lose it or give it away.
Players with multiple registration entries will be disqualified.

To be allowed to participate, you need to hang out in our IRC-channel #HoH on QuakeNet, this is because we do not want to hunt for you on irc or ingame on different servers, you will be disqualified. This is also the channel for reporting of matches (#07).

05. Maps

Allowed maps this season are DM2, DM4, DM6, AEROWALK and ZTNDM3.

Best-of-Three-Matches (BO3)
A regular game in the running season is a best-of-three match.
The higher seeded player decides if he wants to pick the first map and toss away as the latter or if he wants to pick the second map and toss away as the former.
Two examples for the rules follow. The player which is higher seeded is P1, the other player is P2.
Example 1)
- P1 decides to pick the first map.
- The next map is chosen by P2.
- If a third map is necessary four of the five maps in the map pool have to be tossed. The order in which the players toss is P2-P1-P2-P1. The remaining map is played.
Example 2)
- P1 decides that P2 has to pick the first map.
- The next map is chosen by P1.
- If a third map is necessary four of the five maps in the map pool have to be tossed. The order in which the players toss is P1-P2-P1-P2. The remaining map is played.

Best-of-Five-Matches (BO5)
In the finale of the winner's bracket and loser's bracket and also in the grand finale the game will be a best-of-five-match.
Each map can be played only one time in a best-of-five match.The higher seeded player decides if he wants to pick the first and third map or if he wants to pick the second and the fourth map.
Two examples for the rules follow. The player which is higher seeded is P1, the other player is P2.
Example 1)
- P1 decides to pick the first map.
- The next map is chosen by P2.
- The next map is chosen by P1.
- The next map is chosen by P2.
- If a fifth map is necessary the remaining map is played.
Example 2)
- P1 decides that P2 has to pick the first map.
- The next map is chosen by P1.
- The next map is chosen by P2.
- The next map is chosen by P1.
-- If a fifth map is necessary the remaining map is played.

The higher seeded player is marked in the "Next match" section of the User-Panel.

06. Cheating/Whining/Scripts

Disconnecting voluntarily during a Hymn of Hope match means a straight walkover.
No unnecessary whining.
Lame people will be treated lame, nice people will be treated nice.
Any kind of idling or lameness will not be tolerated.
Players who cheat, or try to cheat will get a permanent ban from Hymn of Hope.
Scripts are not allowed in Hymn of Hope. Make sure to check that your opponent has them turned off before starting to play.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

07. Reporting matches

The winner reports the map scores (example: dm4 (23-5), dm6 (13-1) to any of the following admins:
@zingao
@sd-bps
@sd-andeh
@dirtbox
@Adde
(IRC-channel #HoH)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

08. Servers

Since there are players representing many different nations in Hymn of Hope, be prepared to play with higher ping than you're used to.
In general the game can be played on any server both players agree to play on. The Hymn of Hope Admins insist that the players' server-choice is done with common sense and that pings are kept as low as possible.

Players are obligated to decide server 5 minutes before the game starts.
It is the players obligation to find their opponent and agree to a server. However if the players don't agree, the server is determined by the following procedure:
1. Both players have to show their lowest possible ping they can get on 1on1 servers.
2. After that a server has to be found where both players get a ping which is about the same amount higher than their lowest possible ping. A ping difference of ~13ms is never considered to be too high.

If players still can't agree on a server, please contact admins about it. Admins decision is final.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

09. Timeframe

All matches will have a deadline. If players can't organize themselves to get games played and reported by the end of the deadline, WO will be given to the player that proved admins that he really tried to make the game happen. Please report your activity to an admin before the deadline is over.

Matches have to start before 15 min past the hour.
Example: Your game is scheduled to 12. If you haven't started to play before 12:15 there will be given WO or BYE's.
(This might change depending on if the casters wants to broadcast your game or not. If they do, count on some further delay). (If your game is to be broadcasted the casters will tell you so)

If your opponent isn't in the #hoh channel by xx.15 you will get a win.

You are not allowed to start a match before xx.00

The winner is to report the match score at xx.50, if nothing is heard from the winner by then admin will make a decision.

If either player pays no interest at all to get the game played, both players loses, meaning both are out of the tournament.

We do require for you to idle whole time in #HoH this to ensure easy communication.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10. Tournament system

The Hymn of Hope Tournament uses a Double Elimination system. Depending on the number of signups we choose a bracket for 256, 128, 64, etc players. When there are only a few more players signed up than the bracket allows to have (for instance 20 players don't fit into the bracket), then we will have a qualifying round, where the players with the lowest seeding numbers play each other (in this example the last 40 players), so that everybody gets a chance to play.Below i use the abbreviation WB for winner's bracket and LB for loser's bracket.

The initial seeding into the WB is done manually by the admins. Here we seed as many players as we can, using a seeding-groups method. This means we seed players with almost the same skill level into one group and randomize the order within every group. The players we don't seed explicitly get a seed number in the order in which they signed up for Hymn of Hope. So players who aren't seeded explicitly, but are quick at signups are awarded with a lower seeding number. The seeding number isn't shown to the players or public. The players only get to know if they are seeded higher than their opponent so that they can proceed with the map-choosing method explained earlier.

Players who loose their WB-game are knocked into the LB. They are seeded again into the LB according to their match-number in the WB, in order to prevent that a player has to play his WB-opponent who sent him to LB too near in the future.Players who loose their LB-game are out.
